Ventoy is software designed to create bootable USB drives for ISO, WIM, IMG, and EFI files without requiring reformatting, while also supporting multiple ISO images on a single drive.

If you are someone who often creates bootable USB drives using third-party software on Windows, you are usually required to format the USB drive first before it can be used as a bootable device to install an operating system on a computer or laptop.

The problem arises when you want to use the same USB drive for another operating system. For example, suppose your USB stick is already bootable with Ubuntu 20.10 Groovy Gorilla, but then you want to make it bootable for Windows 10. What most users typically do is reformat the drive and create it again. While there’s nothing technically wrong with that, it’s not practical—it wastes your time. That’s why creating a multiboot USB to store multiple operating systems on a single USB drive is far more efficient.

Aside from being open-source, one of Ventoy’s greatest advantages is its ability to easily handle multiboot setups (combining both Windows and Linux, for example). Users simply need to copy the ISO files onto the bootable flash drive without extracting them.

Normally, you would have to reformat the USB drive every time you want to use it for another ISO file. The advantage of Ventoy is that you don’t need to reformat it. You can create a multiboot flash drive with 2, 3, or even 4 operating system ISOs at once.

Additionally, Ventoy allows users to add various types of ISO files onto the same USB drive. This is extremely useful for those who need to install multiple operating systems on the same computer or laptop. With Ventoy, there’s no need to create separate bootable USBs for each operating system.

Ventoy supports a wide range of ISO types, including Windows, Linux, and macOS. This enables users to install different operating systems using the same USB drive.

It also comes with features for organizing ISO files on the USB. Users can group them into folders and add labels to each ISO file, making it easier to find the one they need.

Once Ventoy is installed on a USB flash drive, you simply copy and paste the ISO installer files of the OS you want to boot. Multiple ISO files can be stored on the same USB (depending on the drive’s capacity).

Before starting, make sure you already have the required ISO files stored on your computer. Also, keep in mind that file names and paths must not contain spaces or non-ASCII characters.

Ventoy only initializes and formats the media once to make it bootable, and the process is very fast. After that, the USB remains fully accessible, and you can keep adding ISO files. When booting from the USB, Ventoy automatically detects the ISO files and presents them in a boot menu. You can even use the remaining free space on the drive to store other personal files.

Key Features of Ventoy:

  • Multiboot USB Creation Without Formatting: One of Ventoy’s main features is the ability to create multiboot USB drives without reformatting. Simply copy ISO files of operating systems or utilities to the USB, and Ventoy will automatically detect and display them in the boot menu.
  • Plug and Play: Ventoy supports plug-and-play functionality, meaning you can add or remove ISO files from the USB without resetting or reconfiguring the boot loader. This makes updating your multiboot USB quick and effortless.
  • Universal Compatibility: Ventoy works with a wide range of operating systems and boot loaders. You can use it on different computers with different hardware configurations without issues.
  • Support for Various ISO Formats: The software supports a wide variety of ISO files, including Windows, Linux, diagnostic utilities, and more. This makes it versatile for many use cases.
  • Simple Configuration: Ventoy is easy to set up. Just create folders and copy ISO files into them—no additional configuration required.
  • Automatic Updates: Ventoy automatically detects newly added or modified ISO files when they are copied to the USB. This eliminates the need to manually update the boot loader every time changes are made.
